South Africa to launch biometric asylum application platform in November 2026

South Africa Department of Home Affairs · ZA · 13 Oct 2026

This opportunity page is a BiometricUpdate.com news article, not a tender notice. It reports that South Africa's Department of Home Affairs (DHA) plans to launch a biometric online application platform for asylum seekers by 10 November. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber announced the plan at an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration media briefing in Pretoria on 11 October. The article is dated October 2026. The stated aim is to speed up asylum processing and reduce abuse of the system, as the department faces an estimated backlog of about 120,000 asylum appeals.

According to the minister, applicants will have to submit biometric information. DHA officials will use the platform to: verify applicants' identities; identify people who previously submitted unsuccessful applications; authenticate passports and other travel documents; check for other recorded immigration infringements.

The article places this within the DHA's wider digital transformation and anti-fraud push. That push includes biometric verification for passport applicants, introduced to close the photo-swapping loophole, and a planned national digital ID.

The article does not say whether the asylum platform will be or has been procured, and it names no supplier. It gives no estimated value, procedure type, submission deadline, lots, eligibility rules, technical specifications or award criteria. No tender documents were published with this page.

The article also mentions a separate DHA tender announced in July. That tender sought a service provider to develop, support and maintain a biometric case management system for the department's Inspectorate Directorate and to supply 600 handheld devices with built-in biometric readers for an identity-verification field campaign. Its notice and documents are not among these sources, so its requirements are not described here.

No bidder requirements can be extracted at this stage. A formal procurement notice and tender documents from the DHA, or a link to the earlier case management tender, would be needed before requirements, dates and award criteria can be listed.
